Cheddar and Basil Biscuits

2 cups less 2 tablespoons unbleached flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
6 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 minced garlic clove
2/3 finely grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon crushed basil

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine the first four ingredients then cut in the butter.

In another bowl combine milk, tomato paste and garlic, mixing well.

Combine the dry ingredients with the liquid ingredients and the basil and cheese. Mix to form soft dough.

Place the dough on a lightly floured counter. Knead gently and roll out to 1/2 thickness. Cut dough into desired shapes and place on an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake 15 to 18 min or until lightly golden brown.
