USDA currently has no standards for organic seafood.
However, the National Organic Standards Board is currently reviewing recommendations on aquaculture standards. As part of the review process, the Board is considering:
- Stocking densities
- Requirements for organic feed
- Health care for aquatic livestock
This page will be updated as rules on organic aquaculture are made in the U.S..
Note: Certification agencies in other parts of the world have standards for organic seafood, meaning that there may be some fish on the market that are labeled 'organic.' To be sure that these fish are organic, look on the label to see which, if any, agencies certified them, and then investigate on the Internet what requirements had to be met to earn certification from that international body.
