Minnie Moore makes the garden her classroom.
Moore, a special education teacher at Patrick Springs Primary School, and her students have an organic Bowl of Lettuce Garden in a school courtyard.
Moore described her work with students and her two decades of organic gardening at Saturday’s “Rivers and Bugs Summit” in Axton.
She said the plants — lettuce and other garden vegetables — are grown in a container garden system called an EarthBox. Students take part in the various phases of gardening, even bringing scrap foods from home for composting. Scrap foods from school meals also are added to the garden’s compost container, which has to be shaken several times a day.
