This past weekend, our Savvy Organic Shopper decided to make up a batch of vegetarian chili to take for lunch this week. While at Wegmans in Sterling, VA, she was pleased to discover that she could purchase a number of organic ingredients for her chili at a price similar to, and in some cases lower than, their conventional equivalents. For example, she found a 28-ounce can of Wegmans organic diced tomatoes priced at $1.79. Conventional diced tomatoes were the same price. She also found 25-ounce cans of Westbrae organic kidney and black beans priced at $2.69 each. (Twenty-nine ounce cans of conventional kidney and black beans were $1.49 each). Additionally, she came across a 2.31-ounce jar of Simply Organic cumin for $4.69 (a 1.9- ounce jar of conventional cumin was $5.99), and a 1.2-ounce jar of organic cayenne for $3.99. (Conventional cayenne was priced at $5.79 for 1.5 ounces). Faced with such competitive prices and the fact that only the organic products came with government-backed assurance that they were made without the use of toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMOs, our Savvy Organic Shopper loaded up on organic and looked forward to the delicious meals that lay ahead.
