New study says school food may make kids fatter

A new study from the University of Michigan finds that kids who eat the food served in schools are more likely to be overweight or obese than peers who bring lunch from home, and also are more likely to suffer from high levels of "bad" cholesterol.

her lunch and asked her mom how many calories were in her turkey
sandwich.

"It's a ‘green light' food," pediatrician Joanna Dolgoff told her
daughter. "Don't worry about calories. Just try to make good choices
and eat green light foods."

San Diego Farmers Market: Organic a Must

Ron LaChance runs several farmers markets in Southern California. “San Diego is into organic produce more than any other community,” he says. “When we first opened here we had one organic farmer and I thought the locals were going to run me up the flagpole. They were threatening my life: 'If you don't get organic farmers we're never coming back.'”

LaChance listened, and added more organic farmers, who now outsell the others by about a 4-1 ratio.

I am an environmentalist, though, and I can testify to another role that Meryl has held with great passion - environmental health activist. Meryl Streep and I first met in September 1988. That summer, the ozone hole had been discovered over Australia, where she was filming A Cry in the Dark, and she was moved to act. Upon her return to the states, she offered to help NRDC raise awareness about environmental issues.
