Food stamps go organic

NBC Bay Area

There was much outrage in March when Salon.com exposed hipsters who dared to use food stamps to buy organic food.

Now one Bay Area group is encouraging low-income residents to use their government subsidies to not only eat organic but to eat local as well.

Members of the government run Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program are using the Healdsburg and Petaluma Farmers Markets as a trial run to encourage food stamp recipients to shop at their local farmer's markets, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Well, is it organic or not?

The New York Times

It can be hard enough to decipher the term “organic” when it comes to food. Are there hormones in that skim milk? Did those chicken wings get enough exercise?

But when it comes to personal care items like toothpaste and body lotion, claims like “made with organic ingredients” or “authentically organic” can flummox even the greenest consumer. No federal agency polices organic claims for personal care items — at least not yet — so manufacturers have been able to use these customer-pleasing terms loosely and liberally.

12 Brands, Retailers that are snapping up the world's organic cotton

Ecoterre.com

Organic Exchange’s annual ranking of the top brands and retailers who purchase organic cotton always makes for an interesting read, particularly because inclusion in the list doesn’t necessarily place a company’s ethics—and by extension, environmental commitment—above reproach. (Case in point, Walmart has been numero uno for three years running.) Size, in this matter, is everything, which means that supply-chain volume and global reach count more toward racking up those numbers than any overarching, beatific vision of sustainability.

Organic Pet Food Gets Leg Up from White House

ZooToo.com

Organic pet food received an indirect boost from the White House last week when the President’s Cancer Panel Report exhorted consumers to minimize their cancer risk by choosing food grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, and growth hormones.

“Many known or suspected carcinogens first identified through studies of industrial and agricultural occupational exposures have since found their way into soil, air, water and numerous consumer products,” the panel wrote in an accompanying letter to President Obama.

Eco-friendly furniture gains momentum

Miami Herald

Forget "crunchy'' furniture that looks like it was discovered in an old hippie commune from the 1960s.

"Green'' or sustainable furniture now has a level of style and sophistication we didn't see three years ago when the eco-friendly design movement first gained momentum. Eco-friendly no longer has to mean furniture that looks like it was thrown together from the scrap pile.
